Description

Found this character the other day while trying to find a good manga/anime counterpart to Captain America for a crossover/battle idea.

To be quite honest, was expecting something incredibly GOOFY when I first saw the picture of this character. Was expecting nothing but pure unadulterated unabashed propaganda. When I read the article, containing a pretty detailed summary for the first issue... got something much more interesting. At least in concept. For all I know, it's still pretty dorky, but the main theme caught my interest.

It's basically a different take on the Captain America theme. Almost the 'Superman: Red Son' approach. Captain China was the only surviving member of a project during the infamous 'Great Leap Forward' period to make a Communist Superhero. For reasons that the summary doesn't elaborate upon, he was apparently put into cryogenic sleep. Now 50+ years later, he's resurrected from his decades long slumber.

Needless to say, it is NOT the same China this guy was used to. And that's the basic idea, a staunch Maoist Communist Superhero suddenly finds himself in a decidedly different homeland. A guy who was trained, mentally conditioned to fight Capitalism in all it's forms finds himself in the minority in today's China... at least in sharp contrast to the world he left behind. So there's some definite clashes in how he operates, and what the modern Chinese government expects of him.

Key examples include a botched press conference, where the officials hire a criminal to stage a mock crime to demonstrate this new hero to the world. Needless to say, it doesn't go quite as planned when the Captain (in front of the world's cameras) ruthlessly guns down the criminal instead of beating him up. And then there's his first official mission, which is to provide security for the visiting United States President, Barack Obama.

So yeah, at least from that article, it sounds much more intriguing than one would think such an idea would be handled. And that's basically all I knew of this. Until I got contacted by his creator. ;)

EDIT: Having read the comics, I can say the summary is pretty spot on. There's just some angles that weren't elaborated upon. The Captain is beginning to realize that he wasn't the only surviving test subject (as shown in issue 2). Also there's some air of mystery behind his first true opponent, Bloody Cross, who's not only familiar with the Captain, (the courtesy is not reciprocated) but knows his real identity.

The comics are fun to read, and the character's development shows promise. I look forward to seeing more. ;)

So anyway just for fun (and liking the costume design) decided to put this sprite together using a Captain America sprite. Other items include some wrist-weights from a Samurai Shodown character, and the hat from M. Bison.

This reminds me of City of Heroes' Reichsman...

Of course, they redesigned him from a man in a Nazi uniform to a man in M. Bison's uniform...  So that might be the connection.
